“Common sense must prevail in Brussels; pragmatic decisions not driven by ideology are needed,” said Loránt Vincze, MEP of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ), during a meeting in Târgu Mures (Marosvásárhely).
Mr. Vincze, who ranks second on the RMDSZ EP list, joined Ferenc Péter, the party’s candidate for Mures County Council President, and Attila Zoltán Csibi, the Mures County Regional President, at a press breakfast where they discussed EU developments in the county.
Highlighting various grievances of the Hungarian people in Romania regarding EU decisions, Lóránt Vincze emphasized the postponement of Romania’s full Schengen accession, the rejection of the Minority SafePack initiative by the European Commission (despite significant support), and concerns about the import of Ukrainian grain.
He stressed the imperative to amend these decisions and prioritize the interests of people, farmers, and small and medium-sized enterprises.
Vincze underscored the significance of achieving the five percent threshold in the upcoming EP elections for the representation of Hungarians in Transylvania, asserting that it would demonstrate their influence in Romanian politics and Brussels alike.
Péter, President of the Mures County Municipality and RMDSZ candidate for Mures County Council President, acknowledged the EU’s role in the region’s development, citing major road projects and substantial funding for the Transylvania airport and healthcare infrastructure. He also mentioned notable renovations funded by the EU, such as the Palace of Culture and the Mures County Museum’s natural history department in Târgu Mures.
Discussing the Union’s flaws, Attila Zoltán Csibi affirmed the EU’s positive impact on local development.
He praised RMDSZ-led local authorities for leveraging EU opportunities to invest in infrastructure, citing specific projects in various municipalities.
The RMDSZ representatives emphasized the importance of Hungarian representation in Brussels and the effective utilization of EU funds for community needs in Mures County. They urged Hungarian participation in the EP elections on June 9 to ensure RMDSZ candidates’ representation in the European Parliament.
